ADVENTURES OF INSPIRING PEOPLE
ANDERS MODIG It's funny how you meet people when you need them the most. I was walking across the Nullarbor, heading for Madura, after a night so cold that when I woke up, there was frost in the tent.
A cyclist came into sight far ahead up the long straight road. We watched each other approach, and as he got closer he called out my name and smiled. Anders was originally from Sweden, and was then living in Australia, and was cycling from Melbourne to Perth - for fun, but also raising money for Amnesty international.
Anders unloaded a small stove, I pulled out some food, and there we sat, talking over raspberry tea and biscuits on the side of the Eyre Highway, in the middle of nowhere, until he pedalled off west, and I continued on east.
Since then, we've been firm friends. After his Australia ride, Anders rode his bike from Johannesburg in South Africa to Stockholm in Sweden, where he's now preparing (or 'thinking about') a major kayakking trip somewhere in the Baltic Sea. Go Anders! He has no permanent website, but if anyone wishes to contact him, you can send a message through me.
VERNA & GRAHAM Proof that it's never too late to start your adventures! Verna and Graham were riding a tandem across the Nullarbor at the same time that I did my walk, and we first met the day that I was clocking off my final 42km to reach Nullarbor Roadhouse. In their sixties but still very fit, Verna and Graham had met at ballroom dancing classes when they were 14, and they were wonderful people with whom to share tales of adventures, methods of motivation, and large slabs of chocolate from the roadhouse canteen.
Verna and Graham, you're an inspiration!
